things i’m doing this weekend… that include a teepee, a topographical map of human beings, an epic search for dumplings and wine. lots and lots of wine. (read on, i can explain.)
THURSDAY
Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse Fundraiser, Brooklyn Roasters, Dumbo.
ah, summertime in brooklyn- when free, outdoor events just pour out of the sidewalks and the borough opens it’s wide arms apologetically to you and you forget winter ever existed. embrace it, without hesitation. but if you ever wondered how it’s possible that we are able to kayak, for free, in greenpoint, dumbo, redhook, and maybe (maybe!) other spots i don’t even know about yet. here’s how- show your support at the brooklyn bridge park boathouse fundraiser event thursday and feel good about making a summer of free kayaking possible. oh yeah, and your $20 ticket gets you free drinks and a damn clean conscious for the season. event tonight at brooklyn roasting company, 25 jay st, 7-9pm.
Free Cheese at Hotbird, Crown Heights.
yeah this is exactly what it sounds like, and i’m not sure i need to elaborate here. go to hotbird. get free cheese. that’s it. if you have an issue with this event, you are dead to me. (i’m kidding, but just go.) and the good news is, you can enjoy your cheese baby-free. you know how those babies can be at these types of events… savages, all of them. 546 clinton ave, 7-9pm or until the cheese runs out. please me, cheese me.
Dru Cutler at Rockwood Music Hall, Bowery.
because music like this is good for the soul. bushwick native dru cutler‘s sound blends progressive rock has a nostalgic backbone of folk tunes rooted in harmonious storytelling and for any further description you’re just going to have to go. and then you can leave a comment and tell me how you interpreted it. he joins the Heart&Hand band at rockwood music hall which also is your reason to cross the river this weekend. his set starts at 10pm but get there early to see the rest of the 6-band lineup, before vice buys the venue. 196 allen st. get folked.
FRIDAY
Clear Night, Pioneer Works, Red Hook.
shapeshifters, who needs em? well, the art world does. and you as an observer should. because unlike those familiar objects in your room who become monsters at the end of a long night, this performance is rather justified. kim brandt’s brainchild of dancers and movers evoke the concrete sensations of horizon lines, topographical maps, kinetically charged atmospheres, and you will somehow find your place among all of it in the very kinetically charged space of pioneer works. 8-10pm. sounds shifty.
ROOTS poetry series, ROOTS Cafe, Park Slope.
get back to your roots. because it’s the third friday of the month and that’s what we do on third fridays of the months. poetry series, contributors and observers welcome. 8-10pm, 639 fifth ave. seek, here.
SATURDAY
Ghost Bike Project, Greenpoint Reformed Church, Greenpoint.
there is nothing more liberating, more engaging, more joyous than being on a bike. and in a city as bustling as ours, it is equally as important to experience this euphoria as to build awareness around the prevalent dangers of biking. in honor of those who have met unfortunate fates, help memorialize and prevent future deaths through the ghost bike project. come by anytime between 11am and 5pm and pitch in to help save lives and preserve the sanctity of this beautiful activity. 136 milton st.11am-5pm, info.
The Epic Bike Search for DUMPLINGS. multi-borough.
we must find the dumplings. a multi-borough bike tour in search of those shape-shifting, cross-cultural surprise-inside savory bites. join this 7-mile ride through manhattan, queens, and brooklyn stopping in more than a few dumpling, bao, and noodle spots, and ending with pierogis, which means i’ll be able to meet you at a beer in my little polish hood. $10 suggested donation. BYO-bike, water, lock, and spirit. tickets, here. fold me up in your warm, doughy, pinched corner embrace. baby.
just spend the rest of your day down in industry city.
A Current Affair, Vintage Fair at Industry City, Sunset Park.
following the success of the indoor brooklyn flea market, this pop-up vintage fair features 80+ “premier” vintage retailers (premier vintage? what is that, like it was worn by nobility in its former life?? OH, that’s to justify the pricetag. ok. well, hey, do what you gotta do.), plus fancy bites, drinks, and plenty of racks, spaces, and surfaces to rummage through. both saturday and sunday, get lost in here for a while, then find some treasure. $15 admission. 12-6pm, 220 36th st. $15 admission. all the finds you can… found. are here.
Brooklyn Crush Wine and Artisanal Food Festival, Industry City, Sunset Park.
don your new/old vintage garb and head to this wine + food fest, also in one of the sprawling spaces of wonder in industry city. your $63 ticket includes 3 hours of sampling 175+ wines and local fare, live music, free views and new friends. two sessions, 2-5pm or 7-10pm- so choose your poison. buy tickets here and look for me. i’ll be making my premiere in the premieriest of the premier gear. and i will be drinking all of the wines.
Justin Martin Album release Party, *secret location* (Bushwick).
i don’t really know what a dirtybird is but i think i might be one. and thus i will flock to this dirtybird event. justin martin’s album release party at a ‘secret location’ (the novelty still isn’t lost on me), in brooklyn. tune in here before you turn on, drop out. tickets, $30, location announced saturday night, party goes from 10pm-4am, $30. clean birds not allowed.
SUNDAY
POW WOW by Zero at Brooklyn Mirage, Bushwick.
warm weather means the onset of unyielding temptation in the form of epic day parties, all over our lovely borough. after vowing to behave for the next few months just this past sunday, my inbox was met with an influx of boat parties, sculpture garden mischief, and any excuse to be on a rooftop for hours on end with any running list of european djs. and THIS– this is the launch of them all, and it was the best party i went to last summer. teepees, deejays, sunsets, and all the greatest people you’ve ever met. brought to you by (no surprise) our good friends at zero. brooklyn mirage, 99 scott ave. tickets, $50, just trust me that it’s worth it ok? find me in the teepee of dreams (you’ll know it when you find it.) powwowwowyippeeyoyipeeyay.
Dish-Washing Face-Off at the Diamond, Greenpoint.
dude, i don’t care what they have going on there- the diamond might be the greatest neighborhood bar since the invention of the neighborhood. and the thirsty people that inevitably inhabitated said neighborhood. anyway, i guess sunday they’re going to have a little entertainment in the way of suds and dishes, pitting dishwashers from greenpoint’s le gamin versus williamsburg’s motorino and determining once and for all if nouveau french or nuevo italiano food is… well, stickier. this event, on top of an amazing backyard space, that disc-horshoe remix game, the grounded gondola thing you can get in, a rotating tap of killer beers you’ve never heard of, shuffleboard, and a bathroom that has a tendency to make better decisions for you. let’s all go, ok? sunday. details are here, 43 franklin st.
go forth, ye brooklynites, and weekend.
