things i’m doing this weekend… included but not limited to taking in as much northside and sunshine as i can get my hands on and my soul into.
read on. and join me?
THURSDAY
Macrame Workshop at Dusty Rose Vintage, Greenpoint.
tired of just hanging out? well then, let’s make something out of it. like a wall hanging made completely of knots that looks as beautiful as this. head to the macrame wall hanging workshop at greenpoint’s favorite vintage shop for a 3-hour course by steady hand creative and leave with your own wall hanging plus the skills to make more, for life. and feel good about your hanging. no matter how twisted it may have become. tickets here, 7-9pm, 251 greenpoint ave. all supplies and knowledge provided, no strings attached.
Wolf Parade at McCarren Park, Greenpoint.
wolf parade– if that isn’t the most sauvage* name of a band i’ve ever heard then i don’t know what is. they kick off northside festival with a bang tonight, bringing their intense backbeats and nearly haunting tones dancing upon rich and desperately relatable lyrics. their new 4-song EP promises to fill mccarren park with enough energy to carry us all into a weekend of shows and sunshine and sharing in a perfectly elevated state. if you haven’t rsvp’d, there’s a slight chance i have a spot for you. leave your wolfpack name in the comments section and i’ll decide if you are worthy of joining. everyone else, see you there- 6-10pm, mccarren park, 776 lorimer st. no one is a one-man wolf pack in the wolf parade.

Dia de la Rioja, todo el dia, por todo el mundo.
today is a sacred day, ladies and gentlemen. as it is the national holiday for the rioja region, that blessed area of land that has besstowed upon us some of the best wines in the world. to celebrate, go get a bottle of rioja from dandelion, grapepoint, uva, brooklyn wine exchange, or your local wine shop of choice. open the bottle. share it with friends, or don’t. either way, pour a little out facing east for haro. and then don’t waste another drop. Rioja?! i hahdly knew ‘ah!
Temper Trap and Walking Shapes at Webster Hall, East Village.
first of all, you know that there is nothing better than this song by temper trap. they share their addictive synthy-rock sound with walking shapes, one of the best bands i saw at the buskers fest at spike hill (RIP) a few years back, and now they are doing much much more than busking. such as this sick jam which says it all. (and then all the other songs say a hell of a lot too) don’t miss this one (of two!!) reasons to cross the river this weekend, because this show is at webster hall, 830-1am, 125 E 11th st. just tryin’ to get caught up in that web(sters).

Northside Festival Showcase at Bar Matchless, Greenpoint.
well well well, if it isn’t my enemies hosting an event just down the street from me. and not doing it subtley at all, just blatantly making a rad poster and a bunch of well-placed social media blasts and all around making a super pervasive production of what promises to be a fantastic representation of all things northside friday night, at bar matchless- where you go to get a little lighter™. (i’m working on that one, ok?) performances from heliotropes, very fresh, los bronson, secret crush, and friend roulette start at 8pm for only $7. tickets, here, and limited amount available at the door of 557 manhattan ave at bar matchless. i will be there but strictly for competive analysis. of course.

Begin Again, Forgiveness for Minor Offenses, Bushwick.
dude, i know the feeling. you have all of these things that you want to do but can’t because you have that pesky ticket looming over your head for that stupid drinking-a-beer-while-peeing-outside-and-unleashing-your-dog-on-the-sidewalk-while-riding-your-bike-with-trace-amounts-of-marijuana-in-the-spliff-you’re-smoking. and because you haven’t paid it for months, because it’s a dumb charge and you’re above the system (tressauvage*), if you get one more ticket you spend the night in jail, no questions ask. that is a bad feeling, and overall a fear we don’t have time for given the season. don’t be harbored by your semi-questionable decisions- have your sins forgiventhis saturday (very appropriately) at st. thomas episcopal church where within 3 hours, you will be expunged of your charge without any jail time and free to go cause mischief throughout the borrrough and beyond.

The Belmont Stakes, in Hempstead but watched at Lake Street Bar, Greenpoint.
ok so there’s no triple crown winner this year. huge bummer, but this is still the last big horse race of the season and the last excuse we’ll have to drink bourbon and make bets with our friends and scream and holler at a sporting event until next year... should be a nice way to spend ~2 minutes on saturday. i will likely be watching at lake st. and you should come to, i would like to take your money from you. post time is at 632pm, lake st is at 706 manhattan ave and i’m at the bar, collecting all of the monies.
The Amazing Dumbo Scavenger Hunt, Dumbo.
i often have trouble finding my ID, debit card, cell phone, pants, short-term memory recall, and overall dignity on saturday afternoons. so, better to have a list of more interesting things to run around the city and find instead. and who knows! maybe you left yourself breadcrumbs of cigarette butts and bar receipts that will lead you back to other personal belongings. join the amazing dumbo scavenger hunt from 2-5pm, $25 reservations here.
Happy Makeup Hour at Brooklyn Groove, Greenpoint.
had a rough day of northside celebrating and not sure how you’re gonna make it out tonight? this will makeup for it. head to brooklyn groove for a free makeup application (all natural!) and a glass of wine. every thurs and sat from 4-8pm. makeup application will take 30 min so reserve a spot ahead of time-102 B nassau ave. make up ’til you break… up?

Brian Wilson Performs Pet Sounds, McCarren Park, Greenpoint.
meee-ow! part of me wishes this was actual pet sounds, uttered at different pitches and in varying levels of interpreted joy and distress, from a range of domestic species BUT, the other part realizes that what it actually is is way, way better. brian wilson of the beach boys performs the band’s most famous album in its entirety to close out northside fest. tickets can still be purchased right here, right meow, for $35. show is at mccarren park, weather not permitting- even if it’s raining cats and dogs, the show will go on.
Jack Links Ultimeat Meatathon, McCarren Park, Greenpoint.
dude i don’t know, ok? i’m just here to do the reporting, that does not mean i support everything that i personally handpick to be on these weekend guides each week. i have no idea what this is and god knows that image offers us little help. what i do know is this- it’s jerky day (apparently…), and there will be a meat obstacle course in mccarren park sunday for participants. i hope not too close to the dog park, or brian wilson is going to have quite a cacaphony of background singers.

VAMOS, bk.
<3L.
*sauvage (adj.) fierce and polite, ruthless and yet somehow forgiveable, with a mouth so blatantly teeming with deceit uttered with a slightly french accent. willing to eat you alive as long as a cloth napkin and proper silverware is provided. the most brazen of the beasts. a sauvage is not a wolf in sheep’s clothing, it’s a wolf in a coat made of pure wolf fur. that hasn’t even hit stores yet, he procured it right off the runway at paris fashion week. where the models were other wolves, not to be trusted but to be admired, from a safe distsnce, which is simply no distance at all.
sauvage (n, proper) restaurant recently opened at the corner of bedford and nassau avenue and the subject of much of my recent bivalve consumption as well as the inspiration behind this coming week’s where to eat review.
