If you’ve somehow avoided this phrase recently, then clearly you’re not caught up in the influence of self-help female spiritual gurus that I rather happily find myself caught up in fairly often. This phrase, while “trending” since Sheryl Sandberg’s book caught on like wildfire, isn’t a new concept.
The phrase “to lean in” refers to the way motorcycle drivers have to lean in to the wind on a tight turn to retain speed. This is the only way they can be sure the momentum won’t get the best of them, that they won’t become a victim of the speed but instead will harness it and ride it through.
And if you don’t know where this is going, you don’t know me.
Summer is speeding past us at an alarming rate. With calendars full of work obligations and vacation dates, friendly cookouts and outdoor concerts, it leaves little room for that precious summertime spontaneity we all hold on to, all year long.
Cherish every single moment we have left. Play hooky. Shirk responsibilities. Stay up too late. Get a sunburn. Be that motherfucking biker and make the wind your bitch. Lean in, before it tips you over and you wake up on the other side, cold and alone and road-rashed.
I’m not trying to scare you. I’m just trying to help you, little speed demon. Lean into that turn, lean into every moment we have left. And, if that makes you nervous, just lean on me. It’s what I’m here for.
