Reap the fruits of your labor this weekend. You’ve earned it. Or maybe you haven’t, but whatever. Party like you have. Here’s the way to do it.
Party at House of Yes, all day.
This shouldn’t be a surprise. Anytime you want to celebrate anything, House of Yes is the answer. Birthdays. Divorces. Quitting your job. Labor Day. Buying a new hat and not knowing if it will be accepted in mixed company. Just know that this party Mecca in Bushwick will be there to accentuate all of your best, and any of your worst days too. This Monday they’ll welcome you with open arms, for free, all day. DJs, dancing, aerialists, pools, drinks, and all the best looking people you want to be around. Be there, all day. Info here.
Roosevelt Island Pool, with grills!
Camp out as this candyland of an island paradise, all day. This virtually unknown pool in the middle of Roosevelt Island will have you sun-drenched and nestled between the world’s most infamous skyline and that cool place where you live (Brooklyn), swimming and sipping (they don’t allow you to bring alcohol. It is not hard to bring alcohol.) and even hosting your own intimate cookout. They have two grills and a communal fridge so you can heat those meats only when you’re ready to. Also, there’s almost nothing else to do on the island (ok, ok, the smallpox hospital facade is… there.) so you won’t blink an eye at the $40/$65 (week/weekend) cost of entry. For real, don’t. Just go. Info here.
Makossa Brooklyn Cookout
Labor Day Weekend was made for rooftop parties and frozen drinks and cookouts and bad decisions that feel really fucking good; so good that you won’t look back, not once. To mark the sad end to the season, head to the closing Makossa Cookout at Our Wicked Lady this Friday. It’s will be everything you want it to be. Free before 4pm, then just $5. 2pm-10pm, plus after-party at Rose Gold beneath Cape House. Tickets and info here. 153 Morgan Ave.
Cookout at the Waterfront in Brooklyn Bridge Park
I know, you thought by now you’d finally have the apartment with that sweet sweet backyard and the grill and cookouts every weekend and tons of friends. It’s ok that you don’t. It’s not ok that you don’t take advantage of the public grills that are available for you, all the time. Host your own cookout for you and your vagabond friends at the foot of Brooklyn Bridge Park, overlooking lower Manhattan and Lady Liberty herself. The grills and tables are first come, first serve, however, there’s a rule that you cannot occupy one grill for more than an hour, and people are usually incredibly generous. You’ll find a way in, and probably a way to double the size of your party and potato salad options. Link to the park is here.
MoMA PS1 Summer Warm-Up in LIC
This is the last one of the season, folks. So if you’ve been dragging your feet instead of moving and grooving upon them, stop. Stop now and plan to head to LIC Saturday. This outdoor summer dance party that aims to uplift and represent unknown artists lets you be part of the performance and magic and mystery, while you jam out this week to Annie Mac, FLOORPLAN, Innerwave, Laundry Day (and more!) with all of your best friends and future lovers. Go. Be part of the art. Be part of the scene. Hold onto summer. Hold on to someone. Tickets here. Noon-9pm, 22-25 Jackson Ave. Oh, and go to Bierocracy after and have significant trouble figuring out how to order a drink. The bartender’s name is Zach and he’s there to help!!
Nowadays, all weekend.
Just camp out at Nowadays for all the days this weekend. They’ll be hosting their weekly (but waning) summer BBQ on Saturday, Mister Sunday on Sunday, and a massive all-day all-night party on Monday. Nowadays was made for their backyard parties, so soak up every last drop of the season. Info here.
Beats & BBQ Season Finale at LP N’ Harmony in Williamsburg
Do you see a theme here? Cookouts and music and dancing and booze and love. This is what Labor Day weekend and dreams are made of. So exacerbate your hot dog quota and let’s all get loose. This event, in its twelfth year which is way longer than most people make it in this town. Celebrate with them from 3pm to 10pm. Food is free with a drink purchase, dancing is free if you put your groove in it, love is free if you open your heart. all info here, 683 Grand St.
Shorts of all Sorts Festival at Crystal Lake
Ok, I get it. Maybe you’ve had your fill of hotdogs at this point (fuck you, FDA!) and you kind of want to do something a little more creatively motivating than basking in the sun and drinking beers. It is Labor Day, after all. Let’s use our day off to appreciate the fruits of each other’s artistic labor. Find yourself in the charming back room at Crystal Lake for the Shorts of all Sorts festival. All short films, all female filmmakers, all of rather small stature and wearing shorts. Kidding about that last part, but I thought I was funny. Go and spend time appreciating just enough of so much of the womanly creativity surrounding all of us. It’s free, 5-9pm. Info here. 647 Grand St.
