Hey Brooklyn. I see your weekend peeking over the horizon and it looks damn good. How can I be so sure? Because I planned it.
Your weekend guide awaits. Go on, get going.
Things to do in Brooklyn on Thursday
Magic Hour Market at Casa Powers in Williamsburg
Are you already annoyed by all of the wild stories and drug-fueled adventures and amount of promiscuous sex your Burner friends will be having in a few weeks? Yeah. Me too. And once again, I’ll promise myself to go next year. Find a way to fuel those jealous feelings into goodness and, perhaps, some groovy new home decor, this weekend at the Magic Hour Market, at Casa Powers in Williamsburg. They’ll be gathering artists and makers from all over the world (and plenty from our very worldly community) to raise money for their Magic Hour camp, and art car the Magic Star. Enter to win a sunset cruise on the Magic Star, which would be the coolest date ever in Brooklyn and will likely lead to all the magical things listed in the first sentence. The market is happening from 4-10pm Thursday and 4-midnight Friday. Info here. 139 Powers St.
Private Vietnamese Dinner with Wine Pairings at Bunker in Bushwick
There have been few restaurants to enter into the competitive and adventurous Brooklyn scene with as much excitement as Bunker Vietnamese. Hailed (and confirmed) as one of the most authentic food experiences you can have in the city, this kitschy, funky, and distinctly flavorful spot in Bushwick. And tonight they’re opening the kitchen for a private dinner with Chef Jimmy Tu and wine pairings from Nekeas Vega Sindoa, a small but mighty Spanish winery, for only $80 a person. So, stop reading this right now and click here because seating is limited and trust me, you want to be there. Then, of course, come back and read the rest of everything I’ve planned for you. Dinner starts at 7pm. 99 Scott Ave. #hunkerdownbunkerdown
Dance The Way I Feel at Jupiter Disco in Bushwick
The best way to release all the stress of being cooped inside an office while the hot summer days are passing right in front of your eyes right behind the other side of that window is to Dance the Way you Feel, baby, at this dance-forward dance party. Be the disco queen you are on the inside. Feel mighty real. Don’t look at your watch because time doesn’t matter, not tonight. Forget work on Friday. Have your boss call me. I made you do this. Info here. 1237 Flushing Ave.
Things to do in Brooklyn on Friday
Morgana at Brooklyn Mirage in Bushwick
It’s the first weekend of August. And yeah, I know I know, how the hell did that happen? Well the only reason you’re asking yourself that question is because you haven’t been doing enough to embrace it. It will not slip away if you embrace it, hard, long, and fast. This is how you embrace it, baby. At this city-block-wide, multi-level, outdoor party Meccca of a party space. Avant Gardner’s Brooklyn Mirage is here to satisfy all of your summertime party needs and desires, so get there Friday night to party along with Wolf + Lamb, No Regular Play, and Steven Le Tigre plus all the coolest Brooklyn party people you don’t know yet. Tickets are going fast, get yours here now.
Luxury Summer: The White Party at House of Yes in Bushwick
The first “rave” I ever heard of was a white party, in Barcelona, when I studied abroad. And thus the significance of this bright, clean, seemingly sinless way to get down and dirty with all of your friends and future lovers holds a bit of a significant place in my heart and timeline of unraveling. Come celebrate and commemorate this pristine party machine at everyone’s favorite rave space, House of Yes. Wear white or don’t get in, but get creative about it. This is not the Diner en Blanc. This is the white party. Info and inspiration here. Get your tickets now and, clean yourself up, huh? 10pm-4am, 2 Wyckoff Ave.
Mamma Mia in Transmitter Park in Greenpoint
Oh, here we go again. Another reminder of just how much I miss the movies at McCarren Park… and this reminder comes with SONGS! and DANCES! and a star-studded cast including Andy Garcia! and Cher! and Colin Firth! And fucking MERYL STREEP and ok FINE I will stop missing the McCarren movies, but just for two hours on Friday night. They’re playing Mamma Mia in Transmitter Park, in other words, more comfy seating (grass vs pavement) and you know, a waterfront view and close proximity to my favorite watering holes. Let’s all go, I’ll bring the popcorn and wine. Info here, it’s free of course. See you at 8pm.
Pergo and Tina’s Wedding After-Party at the Springs, in Greenpoint!
If you don’t know these two people, let’s just call this a Regular Friday Night Party at the Springs! Two of my very dear friends are getting married Friday night, and we’re all going to celebrate with them later. “We” being the team of very good-looking and painfully charming people who work at Le Fanfare in Greenpoint. Join all of us and buy them a drink and let’s party. The Springs is located at 224 Franklin St. See you there, around midnight.
Things to do in Brooklyn on Saturday
Denim Bleaching Workshop at A/D/O in Greenpoint
We’ve all made mistakes. And sometimes, they show up on our jeans. Bleach away your sins and breathe new life into those dirty, dirty jeans at A/D/O this Saturday. Yep, that’s the fancy little design center that took over the former Brookly Bazaar space but is doing everything they can to make you forgive and forget. So go, make something of yourself and your old jeans there and then let’s all go get tattoos together and then go out on the town (plan below), starting with a Tiki BBQ in the SAME SPACE! Info here, sign up for a time slot. 29 Norman Ave.
Yaki Tiki Weekend Barbecue at A/D/O in Greenpoint
We’re all a little sad that the Norman left us earlier this summer… drink away your sadness and do your best to forget all about it at the Yaki Tiki barbecue, in the same space (and the backyard too!). The amazing team behind Okonomi and Yuji Ramen have moved into the space and brought with them a Polynesian party that you’re invited to, every weekend. So go. Drink. Eat things on sticks, with multiple sauce options. Don’t bring up the Norman and make people sad. That’s a rude thing to do at Barbecues. Info here, starts at noon. 29 Norman Ave.
Homeboy Sandman and Randy Mason at the Turk’s Inn in Bushwick
If you haven’t yet heard of the Turk’s Inn, then make sure you tell everyone you heard it here first. (I mean it, tell them.) The Turk’s Inn was a kitschy supper club in Northern Wisconsin for 80 years and when it shuddered its doors in 2014 after the owner died, best friends Varun Kataria and Tyler Erickson bought as much of the decor and ephemera as they could at an estate sale and have been working for 3 years to reopen it, in Bushwick. This kitschy, dreamy, and not at all authentic Arabic adventure will transport you, if not anywhere, to the magic of the 1960s midwest. Best of all? They have a music venue on the top floor and Saturday night they invite Homeboy Sandman and Randy Mason to the disco-fabulous stage. Tickets available here. Go early, have dinner. Stay late, get a Kebab. 234 Starr St.
Playa Style at House of Yes in Bushwick
Gear up for Burning Man, or at least look like you fit in at all of those parties that your Burner friends invite you to. (the last one I went to, I thought I would look suuuuper burn-y in a black kimono that I sewed a rather excessive amount of fringe to. Upon entering and descending into a massive and very smelly basement full of light-up neon wigs, would-be furry-conventioners and bedazzled everything, I realized how wrong I was.) It’s a costume bazaar at (where else?) House of Yes. Go. Dress up. Feel cool. Maybe meet someone who will invite you into their camp, or at least back to their place for some afternoon delight. Info here. 2 Wyckoff Ave.
Campfire Storytelling at North Brooklyn Farms in Williamsburg
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this is the last season of our beloved North Brooklyn Farms at its waterfront location. Thus let’s embrace this magical little urban oasis as often as possible. This Saturday night they hold their weekly campfire storytelling event. Bringing a modern spin to the ancient art form of story sharing, just in the shadow of the Williamsburg bridge and overlooking the Manhattan skyline. Be there, before this chapter ends forever. Tickets $5 online, $10 at the door. Info here. 7pm, 320 Kent Ave.
The Brooklyn Tattoo Expo at the Brooklyn Expo Center in Greenpoint
Make your bad decisions last a lifetime at the Brooklyn Tattoo Expo this weekend. Come talk your way off the fence by being in the presence of a bunch of people who want to make you their canvas. Over 100 tattoo artists and apparently, not one graphic designer (see above). Tickets are $15. Get yours here, or go to any tattoo parlor. At any time. Anywhere. Or follow that harrowing, bone-numbing buzzing sound to 72 Noble St. #EXPOseyourself
Things to do in Brooklyn on Sunday
A Tale of Two Tillies at Coney Island Brewery
Inevitably with all of the people in this city and all of our ideas and drinking tendencies, coincidences are bound to happen… such as, ending up at the same bar to “work” but actually drink 2-for-1 G&Ts and ending up sitting two seats down from the guy you had a crush on when you studied abroad in Barcelona (this actually happened) but also, for two breweries to open up in the same month in two different water-front, theme-park towns that were developed 120 years ago by the same man. (this ALSO actually happened) Asbury Park Brewery and Coney Island Brewery are celebrating their collective 4-year anniversaries together this year. It’s a tale of two Tillies, and tale of two cities, and a tale of countless microbrews and thrill-induced screams from both of these wondrous places. Come, celebrate, in Asbury Park and Coney Island, Saturday and Sunday. More on this story and info here. Go Sunday and stay for a Cyclones game!
Our Wicked Lady 4th Anniversary Party in Bushwick
It’s like errrybody is turning 4 these days, huh? One my favorite local party spots and the most romantic rooftop in town 2 years and counting, our beloved Our Wicked Lady is celebrating their 4th birthday in the only way they know how- with a Rock ’n Roll hangover brunch, DJs all day and night, tacos, frozen drinks, dancing, and BYO Makeout Sessions. It’s free, because that’s just how they are and how things should be, in the summertime. Info here. 1-6pm, 153 Morgan Ave.
Summer of Lot Party at the Lot Radio in Greenpoint
It’s a party! It’s a swap! It’s a hang, that will help you hang even better and harder! And it’s happening at the Lot! Sunday’s Summer of Lot party with Pick Up the Flow invites you and me and other cool people to bring things to swap or sell (records, gear, merch, cool shit) plus learn to make your own hammock (or other mesh things!) with Mohammad Asgari, and listen and groove live to the Lot’s amazing lineup of DJs. Come. Hang. Info here. It’s happening from 4-10pm at 17 Nassau Ave.
