Hey Brooklyn, it’s me again. Your social voice and guiding light toward all things good and happening in the borough this weekend. Here’s to you, to where you are, to who you are, to what you’ll do this weekend. Trust me when I say it’s going to be a good one. Or try to prove me wrong. Either way, I’ve made plans for you, waiting for you now in your weekend guide.
Cheers baby. Let’s do this.
Things to do in Brooklyn on Thursday
You’re At Home, an opening at Pioneer Works in Red Hook
Our favorite little warehouse-turned-gallery-and-imagination-space in Red Hook is kicking off its Fall season with You’re At Home, an interactive, inclusive, immersive, and multi-generational exhibit by Jacolby Satterwhite. This ethereal exhibition constructs mythological, queer universes derived from American consumerism, pop culture, African folklore, ritual, and personal narratives. It’s a journey through his memory and psyche that will take you deep into your own. It runs until November 24th but be one of the first to see it this weekend. Then spend the rest of the night at Sunny’s, the best bar in the world. Info here. 159 Pioneer St.
Concerts in the Catacombs of Green-Wood Cemetery in Sunset Park
Halloween is kind of, almost here… I mean, it’s been at CVS since July so at least someone’s getting spooky, right? Get yourself into the spirit with this performance, a recreation of a 15th-century play about destiny, love, and death, that will resonate, reverberate and unfold within the spooky depths of the Green-Wood catacombs. Come first for a whiskey tasting and a winding walk around the historic cemetery and then into the ancient catacombs for the operatic, symphonic show. Tickets, $80 are a steal for this experience. Get yours here now, then be there, 7-10pm. 500 25th St.
Beer, Bourbon and Bites at the Mercy House in Clinton Hill
It’s Thursday and that means you’re going to start pretending like it’s the weekend. You’re going to stay out late. You’re going to be imbibing. Have a little mercy and open your heart while you’re challenging your liver. Revel with a cause at the Beer, Bourbon, and Bites benefit at the Mercy House in Clinton Hill. They’ll be hosting local favorites Da Ciro, Taqueria Tepango, Capt. Lawrence, Six Point and so many others to tempt you into giving and getting a lot in return. You’ll be helping to fund art programs for children with autism and their families. Give your local watering hole a break. The event is $40. Tickets available here now. 274 Willoughby Ave.
Things to do in Brooklyn on Friday
Widow Jane 7th Year Anniversary Party in Red Hook
This city has a way of wearing hard on everything that makes it so very few things here get better with age. Our subway stations are drippy and overrun with rat mob bosses. Neiman Marcus is now a WeWork space. Williamsburg is completely lost. Widow Jane in Red Hook has found a way to bottle up the best of that Brooklyn spirit and make it age in all the best ways. Celebrate their 7th anniversary this Friday with special tastings, live music, live haikus, ice cream and beers, and everything that will make you feel perfectly preserved and aged in only the best ways. Tickets, $40 available here. 218 Conover St.
Discotechnique at House of Yes in Bushwick
Summer might be gone but Donna Summer is still here. And therefore, disco isn’t dead and neither am I and neither are you. Celebrate all of those things plus sequins this Friday night at House of Yes. Because fuck fashion. Why do we need to be told what to wear and buy and be season after season just to frustratingly clean out our closets and throw everything into a Free Box outside our apartment? Shop smarter. Shop vintage. Choose pieces that say something about you and have a staying power of more than just a season. Find it all at A Current Affair, a traveling premiere vintage marketplace happening this weekend in Industry City. The Brooklyn Bazaar is Closing, so go there.
Hey so remember when the Brooklyn Bazaar use to be in that amazing warehouse where you could listen to free shows and buy groovy artisanal goods and eat Brooklyn-made foods and drink with your friends? And then it was outbid by BMW because, well, they were an art collective and BMW is a luxury brand that arguably has no place in Greenpoint? And then it took over that wondrous maze of a social hall on Greenpoint Ave and it delivered us magic and mayhem for 3 whole years? Well, it’s closing. Because Greenpoint is apparently the new SoHo and there’s simply no place for anything that isn’t flashy or money-making or a 40-story apartment building with no real place to put your sofa because it’s all about the view. Go to every event at Brooklyn Bazaar this weekend. Before it’s gone, again.
A Very Kim Joy Happy Hour at Archestratus in Greenpoint
Sweeten up your normal happy hour routine this Saturday with Kim Joy. She’s celebrating the release of her new cookbook and that means bringing her bright, joyous creations to that wondrous little space in the back of Archestratus books. There will be a DIY baking station for you to decorate, photograph, and consume, plus Kim chatting and signing books and also, free-flowing champagne. Get a ticket here right now, they’re going fast. 5:30-7:30pm, 160 Huron St.
Things to do in Brooklyn on Sunday
Gravity Beer Festival at Berg’n in Crown Heights
Do you ever wonder what the hell is going on inside every single little window in every single apartment in this city? There are people in there. There are lives happening. And some of those people are brewing beer right in their apartment, not because of the lack of access to local microbrews but because they believe they can do it better. Come and sample some of the best homebrews this city has to offer at Gravity- A beer festival showcasing boozie beers and their sessional counterparts! Brought to you by the Brewminaries, NYC’s largest homebrewing club, your $40 will get you unlimited tastings, a souvenir mug, and tons of new beer knowledge to impress or annoy your friends with. Get your ticket here now. 1-5pm at Berg’n, 899 Bergen St.
Mister Sunday at Nowadays in Ridgewood
There will be only ONE more Mister Sunday’s after this one, but every week that goes by will increase the risk of the weather not cooperating and the chill of the Autumn wind clinching our joints and rendering us unable to dance all day and into the night to resident DJs Justin Carter and Soul Summit. What I’m saying is, go this week. Show off that new leather jacket you bought. Get down with your bad self and your bad friends. If you don’t, you’ll regret it in the winter. Info here. 3-9pm, 56-06 Cooper Ave.
Down to Earth Farmers Market in McGolrick Park in Brooklyn’s Coolest Neighborhood
I’ve taken a lot of footsteps in my neighborhood after living here for nearly 9 years. And not once have I cared more about what I was taking those steps in as to where my feet would lead me. Thank you, Elle, for prioritizing footwear as you explore the neighborhood. Because after all, it’s not where you’re going, but the tiny name of the designer you imprint on the concrete as you go. So strap on your Clark’s Original Desert Boots this Sunday and head to McGolrick Park for their down-to-earth farmers’ market. Because nothing says “shop local” than mindlessly following the instructions of fashion magazines. (But for real, skip the Clark’s, hit the market)
