Oh hey, Brooklyn. Your weekend fate is written in the sky, in the stars, and more concretely just below me here in your weekend guide. All of the best things to do in the borough this weekend. Quick, there’s no time to waste.
Let’s do this.
THURSDAY
The Multitudes of Miso at the MoFaD in Williamsburg
What do we really know about Miso other than the mysterious flotsam floating around in our pre-sushi soups, settling into some tea leaf-like arrangement that we know is trying to communicate with us something significant about our future? Owner Maiko Kyogoku and Executive Chef Emily Yuen of Bessou is here to help enlighten us. They’ll be discussing the beauty and complexity of this superfood with plenty of samples to feed your curiosity, and beers to quell your confusion with something familiar. Tickets are $20 available here. 6:30-7:30pm. 62 Bayard St.
Mama Yoshi, Japanese Comfort Food Pop-Up at the Diamond in Greenpoint
Japan, home of zen things. Temples. Yin and yangs. Those sand drawing things. A calm and centered culture that feels like a far cry from the hustle and bustle of our fair city… and maybe, just maybe, their secret is in Japanese comfort food. Foods like katsu sandwiches and curry, potato korokke, tonkatsu, and shiso slaw will bring you into the paper-walled houses of Japan and away from the paper-thin apartment walls of Brooklyn. Let Mama Yoshi comfort you this Thursday at the Diamond’s International Pop-Up Dinner series. Then get cozy with a few beers you’ve never heard of from Dave’s always impressive and constantly changing beer list. 7-11pm, info here. 43 Franklin St.
NYC’s Rose Mansion, or Why We Don’t Live in Manhattan
I have a severe allergy against these made-for-instagram installations. Shouldn’t our photographs be a reflection of our lifestyle rather than a life experience imagined to create photographs? Case in point, the new Rose Mansion in Manhattan. Made for Instagram and people who can’t decide what they want to drink, it’s your reason not to cross the river this weekend. Stay in Brooklyn. After all, I’ve already made plans for you.
Drunk Yoga at Our Wicked Lady in Bushwick
What the fuck is up with the drunk yoga? Do yoga. Get drunk. Separately. Get twisted without getting yourself in a bind. Get bound up without being twisted. Enjoy each of these activities without escalating the chances that you’ll break your neck. I love drinking at Our Wicked Lady. They’re doing Drunk Yoga tonight, so go afterward and enjoy a frozen delight on their rooftop. No neck brace required. 153 Morgan Ave.
FRIDAY
Friday the 13th Flash Tattoo Special at Abuela’s in Bushwick
Friday the 13th makes us all want to do something a little dangerous. Make some bad decisions. Test our luck. Lie cheat steal. You know the feeling, that relentless craving for mischief. How about getting a completely random tattoo? Yep. Perfect. Give it to me. Friday the 13th tattoo special at Abuela’s in Bushwick. $20 cash, tip included, gets you one of 20 Friday the 13th-themed tattoos. This is a very popular event, so come early. all info here, 10am-midnight, 608 Myrtle Ave.
Madame Morbid’s Haunted Trolley Tour in Williamsburg
Public transportation is scary. And in the summertime, the smells of all the sins and ghosts of summers gone by haunt the annals of our dear city and tempt us to faint and fall to our imminent demise upon the arteries of the city. Opt for an intentionally scary mode of transportation this Friday night with Madame Morbid’s Friday the 13th Tour. Go back in time in a turn-of-the-century trolley that’s designed to mimic a Victorian funeral parlor and ride through Brooklyn’s most haunted neighborhoods, plus an onsite tarot card reader will be available to answer questions about the fate of the rest of your night, or life. Reserve your spot here. The trolley appears at Driggs and N9th st. Rides are 1hr and 45 min, or eternity. #RideOrDie #RideAndDie #DontKnockItTilYouTrolleyIt
Kostume Kult presents Freakkshow Robot Circus at House of Yes in Bushwick
I’m not sure when Friday the 13th became our sporadic pseudo-Halloween celebrations, but I’m not upset about it. Steer clear of the spooky side of things and instead choose to get lucky at House of Yes this Friday night. Their Freakshow Robot Circus will blur the lines between human, machine, and robot. Come ungrind your gears on their electric dance floor with freaKKs and fantasies, all night long. This is a benefit for the Kostume Kult Burning Man camp, so go and #revelwithacause. Costumes required for entry. Info here, free before 11pm, then it’s $20. 2 Wyckoff Ave.
SATURDAY
Coke Yacht: Midsummer Edition with RINSED in The Hudson River
Listen, don’t shoot the messenger. Or, you know, pass judgment on the messenger’s extracurricular activities because of an event she’s reporting about. Just come to this party, breathe in that sweet salty air on the Hudson River and inhale anything else you want. Our favorite party group rinsed throws the dopest underground parties in the city, and nothing is more underground than those that are floating on water. In a boat. With your friends and rad djs and an afterparty at some undisclosed Manhattan club space that we will all commandeer and then sail that ship way way way way way into the sunrise. Tickets, here, but they are going insanely fast I hear. so get yours and let’s set sail, baby. Boat leaves at 7pm, with or without you.
Hot Summer Nights Free Concert in Manhattan Beach
There’s nothing more lively than live swing music and the dancing that goes along with it. Get swept up in the movement that’s thankfully having a huge comeback and adopt a new hobby for the night (or maybe longer) Saturday night live onstage at the Kingsborough bandstand, overlooking the water. Come see world-class swing jazz musicians that make up Professor Cunningham and his Old School play for free and catch the fever of this contagious dance craze. Move, groove, dance, sweat, feel alive; this is what hot summer nights in the city were made for. Info here. Doors at 7, show is from 8-10pm. 2001 Oriental Blvd.
Beer, Doughnut, and Chocolate tasting at Precious Metal in Bushwick
Brooklyn does a lot of things right, but if there are a few things that we have become known for – amazing breweries, small-batch chocolatiers, and damn good doughnuts. Come celebrate some of the best of the borough at Saturday’s beer, doughnut and chocolate tasting. $25 gets you 4 doughnuts, 4 beers, and 4 chocolates, all from local makers. Get yours here now. 2pm or 5pm, 143 Troutman St.

16th Annual Bastille Day Celebration with Bar Tabac, Fort Greene
Just because US and Canadian independence days are over does not mean that we need to stop celebrating freedom. Bastille Day is this week, and we have the freedom in this country to be shameless Francophiles. celebrate at charming Bar Tabac in Boerum Hill and the surrounding city blocks for an all-day festival featuring multiple petanque ball courts (which is basically a funky version of bocce ball) (which, let’s be honest, is a funky version of bowling), plus tons of French delicacies, and all the chilled rose and champagne you could ever wish for. Plus accordions and berets, bichon frises and frisee salads. And Antoinne Griezman. This is one of the biggest Bastille celebrations in North America so until we can all head east, meet me there. all info here. They kick it off early this year for a massive outdoor screening of the WORLD CUP FINAL. 10am-6pm, 128 smith st. Bastille Day every year is one the best parties I’ve ever been to in Brooklyn (and I do not say that lightly), so Sunday is not the day to be le tired.
Mario Kart Tournament at Bar Uni in Greenpoint
Maybe you’re not into sports or French things; or maybe once you’ve had your fill of sports and french things, you want to spend the rest of Sunday doing something completely different. Maybe you have an uni fetish. Whatever your reason, head to the Mario Kart tournament at Bar Uni on Sunday. This charming Japanese cocktail-inspred spot in Greenpoint welcomes you to fight it out on the big screen playing your 16-year-old self playing some weird Italian character in a small car.
