Things to do in Brooklyn on Thursday
Photoville Opening Night in DUMBO
Facing the reality that all of our beloved outdoor, warm-weather activities will inevitably have to be replaced by indoor activities soon is tough. But what if, before we all become museum-goers and spa-seekers, there was one last massive outdoor art experience at the foot of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge showcasing the work of hundreds of amazing photographers all within intimate shipping containers? And what if it was happening this weekend? And it was free? It would be called Photoville, and it would all be waiting for you, right now, in DUMBO. Wander through a maze of shipping containers, meet the artists, sign up to learn something, choose your own adventure. Move and be moved. It opens tonight and goes through the 22nd, but go this tonight for their opening night party. Info here.
The Last Meat Hook Backyard BBQ in Williamsburg
Somehow it’s the middle of September and we’re all standing around wondering where the hell summertime went and wishing there was still sand in our sheets and thinking about all the hot dogs we didn’t eat… and also, where that hottie went that we met that one night and that thing happened in the back of the bar and why we didn’t get their number. Make yourself feel better Thursday night with the last (yeah, the last. You’ve missed all the others) the last of the Meat Hook’s backyard BBQ’s. They’ll be mixing their great meats with the culinary geniuses behind Di An Di and funky-fresh brews from Grimm Ales. No tickets, cash only, lots of meats. Info here, 6-9pm, at 397 Graham Ave (behind the Meat Hook).
Natural Wine for the People at Archestratus in Greenpoint
There is something about natural wine that feels a bit intimidating. What is it exactly? And at what point did something that is inherently natural become unnatural? And what if I’m offended that it has, like, no filter? Come to a safe, welcoming space Thursday night in the back of a charming cookbook store in Greenpoint to find the world of natural wines finally approachable. Alice Feiring, one of the leading pioneers in the natural wine movement will be walking you through a wine tasting in celebration of her new book Natural Wine for the People, and pairing up with food columnist Melissa Clark of The NY Times to pair some perfect cheeses with each. Tickets, $20 available here. 7-9pm, 160 Huron St.

18th Ward Brewing Opens in East Williamsburg/Greenpoint
It feels impossible to be the first person to discover something in this city. But then sometimes someone (read: me) gives you a little tip that says, “hey… there’s this cool new thing. Be the first of your friend’s to go.” The lovely people behind Jimbo Slim’s have opened a brewery across from Brooklyn Steel. Their soft opening was Wednesday, which means they’ll be all ready for your loud ass to welcome them to the neighborhood Friday night. Go. Tell your friends. Eat dinner before, their kitchen isn’t open yet. Don’t act like this is a problem- you usually drink your dinner on Fridays anyway. Info here. 300 Richardson St.

Moffat Street Block Party in Bushwick
I am always just trying to make New York feel like a small town. And the best way to do it this weekend is at the charming Moffat Street Block Party. It’s an all-day soiree in this micro-neighborhood featuring four local bands and a smattering of DJs, a cheerful mariachi band, homemade Mexican food, games, beers, and one very unlucky pinata. Noon-7pm, on Moffat between Knickerbocker and Irving Ave’s.
Oyster Monitoring in Bushwick Inlet Park in Williamsburg
You should care about the health of the city’s surrounding waters. Why? Because, inevitably the health of the water is connected to the health of the city dwellers and is partially responsible to keeping us all hydrated, …. and calm enough not to lose our shit on the subway platform when everyone is sweating and on edge and the G said it would arrive 24 minutes ago. Come and monitor the scene by checking in with the river-dwellers, New York’s native oysters! Join the North Brooklyn Boat Club and the Billion Oyster Project and find out what we’ve been doing and what we can continue to do to protect this precious ecosystem. If nothing else, maybe they’ll give you some secrets on how to not pay rent in this town. Sneaky, seductive little bivalves. Info here. 3:30-5pm, 56 Quay St.
