Celebrate Fall in all the best ways. Forget the Pumpkin Spice and however Elle magazine thinks you should explore my neighborhood. Just get out in this crispy cool air with a crispy boy in your hand, a cool lover on your arm, and go forth and do all of the things I’ve planned for you.
Come on, let’s go. Because after all, Winter is coming…
Things to do in Brooklyn on Thursday
Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, all over the Borough
Halloween is (kind of) upon us, although it’s been at CVS since July. Help get yourself into the spooky spirit with the fourth annual Brooklyn Horror Film Festival. It’s happening all over town, with special live performances at any of those creepy after-hours parties in Bushwick that always end up being a really bad idea because everyone’s faces are melting off. It starts tonight, check the schedule here and get scared.
Great Ryes of America: Walk Around Tasting at NY Distillery in Greenpoint
Hey baby, what do I have to do to get a little ryes out of you? Hm? How about invite you to an event in a distillery where you can walk around and taste 35 American whiskeys before choosing one (or a few) to indulge in while sitting at the vintage wooden bar in one of Greenpoint’s coolest and most hidden bars? Yep, I thought that would work. Check out this rye whiskey tasting at the New York Distilling Company and it’s awesome attached bar, the Shanty. Drink enough to sing a sea shanty, or drink enough not to. You do you. Tickets, $25 available here. 6:30-8:30. 79 Richardson St.
Easy Listening Comedy Night at Bodeguita Bar in Bushwick
The number of comedy shows in this city on a nightly basis is almost laughable. But what else do you expect from a city of 8.6 million people and the endless ability to observe daily occurrences that are pure comic gold when retold properly on a small stage somewhere? Let me help you navigate those uncharted waters of tiny stages and nearly guarantee your trip will be worth a laugh. Bodeguita in Bushwick hosts some of the best comedy in the city every Thursday, and this week will be no exception. Oh, and they also have a charming rooftop and damn impressive cocktail list so when you get that “I think I can do standup too!” post-show energy, there will be a boozed-up audience waiting for you. The laughs start at 9pm. Info here. 6 Suydam St.
Rooftop Reds presents Paranormal Activity in the Brooklyn Navy Yard
There is no doubt in my mind that the Brooklyn Navy Yard has some spooks haunting around in it with over 200 years of history within its gates. Besides, everyone knows ghosts love Wegman’s! Anyway, go conjure up some spirits Thursday night on a rooftop in the Navy Yard. It’s Pizza, Wine, and Movie night at Rooftop Reds and all month they’ll be showing spooky films, starting this week with Paranormal Activity. Go, get scared and get close with your lover. $20 gets you two slices and a glass of wine. Tickets and info here. 6-9pm.
Things to do in Brooklyn on Friday
Open House New York, Citywide
We live in a city with an iconic skyline and a plethora of architectural masterpieces that we can only gaze at from afar before returning to our little shoebox apartments. Until this weekend. Open House NY opens the doors, chambers, and windows and gateways of hundreds of unseen or unapproachable destinations all over the city. Which I’m still unsure if that will make me feel better about living here or worse, but it will at least satiate my curiosity about what the hell is happening inside these boobies. Also, please feel free to continue boycotting the pretentious space that took the Brooklyn Night Bazaar from us. Plan your weekend here. Keep in mind Domino Park is always open. Ok bye.
Vice Night Market at Villain in Williamsburg
With the very sad news that our beloved Brooklyn Bazaar will be closing (again…) at the end of the year means we need to embrace what’s left of it and also lift up those events and venues that are trying to keep Brooklyn getting drunk and making bad shopping decisions late at night. Head to the Vice night market this weekend to do just that. Food. Booze. Games. Music. Wares. It’s all here, under one roof. 7pm-midnight. 307 Kent Ave.
Blood Night at House of Yes in Bushwick
This is the closest you’ll come to living out your vampire fantasies. Head to Blood Night at House of Yes this Saturday night. Wear red, in lace or leather or latex or velvet or anything that will make someone want to rip it off of you with their teeth. Dance all night, give in to lust, don’t worry about your impending walk of shame. Celebrate life, love, blood. This is your Halloween warm-up, dress and act accordingly. 10pm-4am. Tickets and info here. 2 Wyckoff Ave.
Honk NYC Street Band Festival, All Over Town
New York kind of pretends to have everything, but if you’ve ever been to New Orleans or Lisbon or Mexico City, you realize that we’re really lacking on the street band front. Let’s bring those buskers above ground and get outside the warehouse to shake our stuff on the street, all over town, this weekend. It’s the 13th Annual Honk NYC fest featuring 20 concerts and countless pop-ups all over the city. Check the schedule here and get movin’ to get groovin’.
Things to do in Brooklyn on Saturday
Bernie’s Back Rally in Queensbridge Park
Because what we need now is to all rally behind Bernie and band together in hope of change. Come see our future president and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, show your support, donate to his campaign and then get out there and fucking vote as if your life depends on it. It does. RSVP here.
Get your Wax on with Fjallraven at Cato’s Army Navy in Greenpoint
If this chilly weather makes you wax poetic maybe it also will make you want to realize that it’s only going to get colder… and you need to protect your poetic little heart and body. Come to Cato’s Army Navy this Saturday to do just that. Bring your own Fjallraven canvas gear to be waxed, for free. They’re teaming up with the Swedish brand to bring you some seasonal exclusives and help you prepare for Winter in style. Go, because this is just so Brooklyn. 2-6 pm, 654 Manhattan Ave. Info here. Wax on.
Paint a Community Mural in Bushwick
Come leave your mark on Bushwick without having to do it illegally and late at night and maybe a little bit too drunk so you aren’t nervous but then the next day you forget exactly where you spraypainted stuff and how much you did it. You can create a community mural instead and not have to field sneaky phone calls from angry business owners the next day. Or, you can do it the illegal way. This is Brooklyn and you’re supposed to cut loose and paint the town red (or blue) every once in a while, right? Info on the mural here. 46 Graham Ave.
Ghost Tour at the Merchant’s House Museum in NoHo
Your reason to cross the river this weekend and then fucking turn around and come right back and hope no spooks are stuck to your back. Come to this ghost tour at the Merchant House Museum, the most haunted place in the city. Yeah. The most haunted. And you thought the 21st Van Alst stop on the G at night was spooky. Come to their candlelight tour and hear stories of the seven family members who died in the house, whose funerals were held in the double parlor hung with black crepe. You’ll hear (and feel) the chilling tales of restless phantoms, voices calling into the night, and unsettling occurrences, all from the people who actually experienced them. For the VERY brave, buy tickets to the midnight ghost tour with expert paranormal investigator Dan Sturges. All tickets available here. I will not be going. Have fun. Don’t call me when you can’t sleep. 29 East Fourth Street.
Doggy Costume Contest and Fundraiser at The Footlight Bar in Ridgewood
I just feel like this is a little discriminatory. Why can’t my cat come? He’s cute. And would be even cuter in some sort of costume. And wouldn’t it be cooler if all of those dressed up pups had something to chase around? Regardless, head to this very adorable fundraiser. Pet cute dogs. Drink free beer. Revel with a cause. Go home and hug your cat and make sure he appreciates not getting dressed up, and not being a dog. Info here. 3-6pm, 465 Seneca Ave.
Creature at House of Yes in Bushwick
And then get in touch with your own wild, animalistic side and dress yourself up accordingly for this Creature party at House of Yes. Release the beauty of your inner beast. Bare your teeth, bare it all. Lose your mind on the dancefloor. Nibble on a stranger’s neck (as long as they definitely give you that “come nibble” look) Costumes are required for free entry before 11pm, so it’s a good chance to test out whether or not your friends will think you’re a furry on Halloween this year. Info here. 10pm-4am.
Things to do in Brooklyn on Sunday
Fall Festival at Domino Park in Williamsburg
You don’t have kids (just assuming here, if you’re reading this) but you still love the Autumnal thrill and chill of a good old fashioned fall festival. Embrace it this Sunday at Domino Park… you know, that park that was mandated to be created by the towers that will be built behind it but we can still only be so mad because the park is kind of perfect and, Tacocina exists. This Fall Festival has been created for families and also so you can find a place to “chill” with your friends who have kids. Face painting. Micro-brews. Bobbing for apples. Looking for your credit card and realizing it’s probably at the bar still. Bobbing and kind of clandestinely making out with someone below the water, because fuck apples, look at Eve! Anyway, there are things there for you. Because the seasons are changing. Change with them, won’t you? Better explanation here.
Costume Market at House of Yes in Bushwick
You know you don’t have a costume yet. And that’s ok, as long as you admit that your playa-inhabitant friends are oh-so-willing to bestowy upon you their closets and their closest costume options. And where else will they do it than at our beloved House of Yes. Go, shop. Get a little tipsy. Bring something together that feels like Ross Gellar explaining Sputnik, but bettter. Halloween is coming. Don’t be that uncool. Info here. 2 Wyckoff Ave.in Bushwick
