Hey Brooklyn. Looking to go off the grid this weekend? Get a little out of line? Separate yourself from the squares who are only really here to fill in the gaps and also the cubicles within this building in the financial district?
I hear you and I’m here for you. Let’s make a racket. Let’s get out there. Let’s start here, with your weekend guide.
Things to do in Brooklyn on Thursday
Heirloom Dinner at Archestratus in Greenpoint
Things in our lives should be handed down, kept close. They should feel like they came from somewhere and someone. They should be time-tested. Forget the fleeting. Place yourself among a communal table of people with stories to tell, sharing plates that came before us and will likely outlast us. Do it this Thursday at a cookbook bookstore in Greenpoint, as you experience an Heirloom dinner cooked by the woman who wrote the book on such things. Get your tickets now here. Because good things like this will live on forever, but will only happen in such a way tomorrow. 7-9:30pm, 160 Huron St.
Dinner and a show at Elsewhere in Bushwick
Set yourself up for a perfect Thursday night, elsewhere. This dynamic space in Bushwick has a perfectly industrial-chic rooftop, up to 6 shows per night, and Mission Chinese on the ground floor to start your night off with good, albeit spicy, intentions. Reserve a table here then choose between Lola Kirke, Infinity Shred, and Snow Tha Product. Or, take all three. Just make sure you start with the thrice cooked pork. Info here. 599 Johnson Ave.
Things to do in Brooklyn on Friday
Pink Mammoth Return from the Playa Party at House of Yes in Bushwick
Remember when pink was just pink and not millennial pink and people didn’t flock to the same cute pink cafes to photograph eggs on surfaces and themselves holding foods they aren’t eating against a pink wall with just the right of added blush to their cheeks? I do, and so does Pink Mammoth, the original pink party on the Playa. They’ll be celebrating their return from the Playa Friday night and turning House of Yes into a pink playground. So go and get over millennial pink and millennials in general and party in your pinkest duds and with your pinkest buds, all night. Tickets start at $10 and are available here. 10pm-5am, 2 Wyckoff Ave.
The Great DUMBO Drop and Block Party in DUMBO
So maybe watching hundreds of thousands of elephants drop from the sky wasn’t in your game plan for the weekend. But, now that I’ve mentioned it, is it? Come on, just think about it. Think about it and then head down to DUMBO for the 4th annual DUMBO drop, They’ll be dropping a fuck ton of elephants over Brooklyn’s most instagrammable neighborhood to give you the opportunity to take that photo and also be pelted by small elephants, for prises! If that’s not enough, they’ll be throwing Summer’s last city block party (anyone else still thinking about this amazing photo coverage of the iconic summer block parties via the NYT?) so go get your floating elephant and also food from local vendors, live music, and a dance party that you’ll consider a pregame. 4-9pm. Info here.
Uptown: A Prince Party at Baby’s All Right in Williamsburg
You’ve always been an uptown girl. Even in your downtown, or North Brooklyn, or East Williamsburg, or South Slope world. Prove it on the dance floor Friday night at Uptown: A Prince Party, at Baby’s All Right. This is where you want to get your funk on. Dance all night, stay up ’til dawn, forget about your ‘uptown’ apartment, Find a new home, with a new lover. Baby, you were born for this. Tickets here. 11pm-4am, 146 Broadway.
Basquiat’s “Defacement”: The Untold Story at the Guggenheim in Manhattan
With the onslaught of “you’re the real masterpiece!” made-for-Instagram pop-up “museums”, attention and visitation of so many of our world-renowned museums is down. And that’s shameful. Get your head out of your ass and yourself out of the frame and go to the Basquiat exhibit at the Guggenheim. It runs until November 6th and will give you an emotionally gripping trip through the life and work of this Brooklyn-born artist as you wind down and around Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpiece. Oh and just to let you know, there’s no monochromatic ball pit at the bottom. Info here. 1071 Fifth Ave.
Things to do in Brooklyn on Saturday
Gala Galactica at House of Yes in Bushwick
Rid yourself of the social pressure of being “down to earth”. Earth. What a snoozefest, right? Space out from this planet and blast off into another galaxy at the Gala Galactica at House of Yes on Friday. This is your invitation to utopia, your evening of intergalactic art, celestial elegance and deep space dancefloor exploration. Wear your most glamorous galactic styles, dress as your future perfect self. Dance all night. Free with an RSVP before 11pm, or buy your $30 tickets here. 10pm-4am, 2 Wyckoff Ave.
Campfire Storytelling at North Brooklyn Farms in Williamsburg
This is not a happy story. This is a sad one. Our beloved North Brooklyn Farms is being squeezed out by those hard-to-miss mammoth skyscrapers on the Williamsburg waterfront and that means no more sunset communal dinners in the garden, no more public green space, no more untouched city utopia. Go hear some happy stories around the campfire and pretend that it will never end Saturday night. It’s campfire storytelling, and it’s what you want to be doing and where you want to be doing it. 8-10pm. BYOS’mores. Tickets here. 320 Kent Ave.
Tie-Dye Party with StuyDYED at Strong Bow Brewery in Carroll Gardens
Don’t dingey whites make you want to dye? Yeah, me too. Come, cover up those dirty summertime sins and promise yourself you’ll simply never buy an expensive plain white tee again at this crafty little event at Strong Rope Brewery. StuyDYED will show you how to revive your shirts, your sheets, your socks, and anything else you decide to take off and make prettier after a few brews. Reserve a spot here. 1-4pm, 574 Presidents St.
Music for the Masses New Wave Night at St. Vitus in Greenpoint
This is the best dance party in Brooklyn right now. Why? Because it’s not the same techno-disco-mashup that mashes you against way too many post-college bodies in a sweaty “underground” scene that you had to pay $30 to get into after being screened by some snooty ex-model with an earpiece and an attitude (are you reading this, Hotel Chantelle?) It’s a grungey, synthy dance party in a heavy metal music venue and as much as it’s “for the masses”, it’s not for the weak at heart. It’s for you, you edgy Brooklynite looking for mischief and mayhem and somewhere you can actually dance all night to Depeche Mode, The Cure, New Order, Joy Division, and your other favorites. It’s free until midnight, but get in line early(ish). Info here. 1120 Manhattan Ave.
Psychemagik at the Sultan Room in Bushwick
If you haven’t yet heard of the Turk’s Inn, then make sure you tell everyone you heard it here first. (I mean it, tell them.) The Turk’s Inn was a kitschy supper club in Northern Wisconsin for 80 years and when it shuddered its doors in 2014 after the owner died, best friends Varun Kataria and Tyler Erickson bought as much of the decor and ephemera as they could at an estate sale and have been working for 3 years to reopen it, in Bushwick. This kitschy, dreamy, and not at all authentic Arabic adventure will transport you, if not anywhere, to the magic of the 1960s midwest. Best of all? They have a music venue on the top floor and Saturday night they invite Psychemagik to the disco-fabulous stage. Tickets available here. Go early, have dinner. Stay late, get a Kebab. 234 Starr St.
Things to do in Brooklyn on Sunday
Mister Sunday at Nowadays in Ridgewood
There will be a few more Mister Sunday’s after this one, but every week that goes by will increase the risk of the weather not cooperating and the chill of the Autumn wind clinching our joints and rendering us unable to dance all day and into the night to resident DJs Eamon Harkin and Octo Octa. What I’m saying is, go this week. Show off that new leather jacket you bought. Get down with your bad self and your bad friends. If you don’t, you’ll regret it in the winter. Info here. 3-9pm, 56-06 Cooper Ave.
Fiddlin’ at Film Noir Cinema in Greenpoint
We could all use a reason to feel a little better about our country right now. Right? Seeing this film will help, and especially seeing it in a hidden, antique film noir cinema in the back of a video rental shop (they still exist!) on a residential street in Greenpoint. Fiddlin’ will make you believe in music again, and Film Noir Cinema will make you believe you believe in yourself again, if you’ve had the weekend I expect you’ve had. Tickets here. 6-8pm. 122 Meserole Ave.
