Things to do in Brooklyn on Thursday
Shortie Film Festival in Williamsburg
A man walks down the street, he says, “why am I short of attention? Got a short little span of attention…” And then he stumbles upon this event in Williamsburg and suddenly, his nights aren’t so long. It’s the inaugural Shortie Film Festival, an international festival featuring films that are 30 minutes or less. The 2-day festival helps to propel emerging and provocative filmmaking, and ends with a bang on Friday with an awards ceremony and after-party. So go, get that short, insatiable little span of attention something to settle upon. Schedule and tickets here.
Live Music Thursdays at Brooklyn Cider House in Bushwick
Just because it doesn’t feel like Fall on the outside doesn’t mean you can’t make it feel like Fall on the inside. And that means by sipping some Brooklyn-made cider in a cidery in Bushwick while listening to a Brooklyn-born musician serenade you with blues tunes. Break out of your dull happy hour routine and head to Brooklyn Cider House this Thursday night. It’s where you want to be. Octopus Kid will be jamming out 7-9pm, ciders will be flowing all night. Info here. 1100 Flushing Ave.
The Defender IPA Costume Dance Party at Brooklyn Brewery in Williamsburg
Yeah, I agree. It’s fucking annoying that as soon as September ends we’re completely bombarded by pumpkin things and leafy decor and cornucopias and whatever else used to happen to our planet before global warming became a very very real thing. Fall does not need to be shoved down our throats (ahem!) But what might be a good idea to do early is to test out your Halloween costume, or just dust off any of your Burning Man get-ups, at this event at the Brooklyn Brewery. It’s a costume dance party which sounds lame so let’s just call it an off-site House of Yes rave. This is the way they celebrate their ever-so-popular Defender IPA, so celebrate you will too. Costumed revelers get one free beer. So bring a few costume changes (if you get what I’m sayin’) This event is FREE, RSVP here. 9-midnight, 79 N 11th St.
Things to do in Brooklyn on Friday
Hump! Film Festival with Dan Savage at House of Yes in Bushwick
Listen guys. If an amateur sex tape is enough to launch Kim Kardashian into stardom, and thus all of her other relatives or whoever those people are, then maybe it’s time we pay a little more attention to said films, and less to the monsters they can create. Our own beloved sex guru Dan Savage has been celebrating these films through Hump! A festival of short dirty films all created by people who aren’t porn stars but want to be for a weekend. Five-minute films showcasing what they think is hot and sexy, creative and kinky, their ultimate turn-ons and their craziest fantasies. It’s happening (where else?) at House of Yes. Get tickets here now– they’re selling out fast but this is a 5-day festival. Also, please keep in mind House of Yes’s house rules apply for this event – No blowjobs on the dancefloor, bathrooms are ok. 6:30pm, 2 Wyckoff Ave.
Then stay for Seven Heavenly Sins Party, also at House of Yes
Because all of our lusty desires can’t possibly be contained in 5-minute intervals, stay and celebrate your sinful nature at this Seven Heavenly Sins party. Express your temptation. Love your lust. Indulge your desire. Crave succulence. Rage for passion. Relax into joy. Envy your dreams. Dress to express heavenly sinful pleasures (see inspiration here) Get in free before 11pm, party goes until 4am. Info here. 2 Wyckoff Ave.
Le Corbuffet at Archestratus in Greenpoint
Food should be fun, and delicious. And Esther Choi is coming to Greenpoint to prove this to you. If you’re unfamiliar with Le Corbuffet, just take a minute to look at this hilarious list of recipe titles. And then immediately secure your spot at the Le Corbuffet dinner at Archestratus. Because deep inside, we all kind of want to eat artwork. (right?) Tickets here. 6-9pm, 160 Huron St.
Things to do in Brooklyn on Saturday
Cider Fest at North Brooklyn Farms in Williamsburg
If you haven’t heard yet (or haven’t been listening) we are losing our beloved North Brooklyn Farms forever after this season. So that means you need to be there, all the time, up until the end. And also maybe let’s all go down with the ship. And let’s start here, at their annual cider fest, harvest carnival, and square dance. Be there or be square and also without apples. Info here. 5pm, $50. Which is worth it just for the sunset.
Superdisco at the Brooklyn Mirage in Bushwick
Disco isn’t dead and neither am I and neither are you. Celebrate all of these things Saturday at Brooklyn’s best party venue. They’ll be exploding sound on their entire block in Bushwick all night with Eli Escobar, Amp Fiddler, and Midnight Magic, accompanied by all of the amazing visuals you can only find at a space this ethereal. Get tickets here now. 10pm-4am, 140 Stewart Ave.
Nick Cave Owns a Bar at Pete’s Candy Store in Williamsburg
Let’s be honest- most of us will do absolutely anything if it will be a good story. And as such, if two friends heard that Nick Cave owns a bar in Berlin, they traveled to their from Boston in search of it. And Aug Stone is here to tell the story, in the back of Pete’s Candy Store. Go and find out what they found out. Save yourself the trip. Info here. 6-7:30pm, 709 Lorimer St.
Oktoberfest at Bierocracy in LIC
And you thought you knew how to Oktoberfest- wait until you see how Czech people Oktoberfest. Come to Bierocracy Saturday night to see two grown adults in impressively authentic lederhosen, and one very handsome man behind the bar. Drink beers. Order a mojito. Wear overalls. Get over it all. It’s Oktoberfest. 12-23 Jackson Ave.
Things to do in Brooklyn on Sunday
Mister Sunday at Nowadays in Ridgewood
There will be a few more Mister Sunday’s after this one, but every week that goes by will increase the risk of the weather not cooperating and the chill of the Autumn wind clinching our joints and rendering us unable to dance all day and into the night to resident DJs Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin. What I’m saying is, go this week. Show off that new leather jacket you bought. Get down with your bad self and your bad friends. If you don’t, you’ll regret it in the winter. Info here. 3-9pm, 56-06 Cooper Ave.
