Piatta Dinner at Archestratus in Greenpoint
Start your weekend off sitting around a long communal table beside all of your friends and new lovers, sharing foods and flavors in the most Italian of ways. This piatti dinner inspired by so many moments and meals that author Stacy Adimando had in Italy, she’ll bring all of that magic to Archestratus in North Greenpoint tonight. Multiple courses plus dessert, and beer and wine for purchase. $50 tickets are available here. Dinner starts at 7pm. 160 Huron St.
Catharsis Fest 2019 at Nublu in Alphabet City
From the people who have bared it all for you in the park in perfect iambic pentameter comes this therapeutic festival that will let you let it all out. What they promise will be a “wild night of unleashed feelings, passionate rituals, and drinking your angry little heart out. Stripteases, a literal fight with the patriarchy, live music, drag, doomsday fortune tellers, and more performances!” They’ll have screaming pillows and confession booths, spankings and whole body art. Plus the chance to have your own cathartic fantasy played out live on stage. This is your best reason to cross the river this weekend, so don’t miss it. Tickets start at $40, available here. Let it all out from 8-11pm at 151 Ave. C.
Mama Mia at Bushwick Inlet Park in Williamsburg
Outdoor film season is finally upon us, and there are tons of options around town from everywhere to the deck of an aircraft carrier to the rooftop of an urban winery. But what better venue than the park we’ve been fighting for for a few years now, just narrowly grasping it from the grips of mindless developers? Come see Mama Mia tonight at Bushwick Inlet Park tonight. The event is free and you can bring your own wine. Just don’t tell anyone you heard it from me. Check out the schedule here. Films start at 8pm at 50 Kent Ave.
Things to do in Brooklyn on Friday
Gender Neutral Release at Threes Brewing in Gowanus and Greenpoint
In this sex-positive revolution we’re having, it’s important to remember that beer isn’t just for the boys anymore. It isn’t just for the girls either. It’s for the trans, queer, lesbian, gays, bisexuals, and it’s for the spirit, the rainbow, the light and the life in all of us. Kick off Pride week at Threes Brewing this Sunday and sip their newest can release Gender Neutral. We’ve come a long way, baby, and there’s still a lot further to go but now let’s celebrate by drinking a progressive beer and then peeing wherever the hell we want. I mean, well you know what I mean. Find it at both Threes locations in Gowanus and Greenpoint. DJs, dancing, food, beers, joy, from noon-10pm. Info here. 333 Douglass St.
Foreplay and House of Love at House of Yes in Bushwick
Come let your fetish come to live in a room of friends and future lovers all in leather and lace this Friday at House of Yes. Let their monthly transformation into the House of Love seduce you all night long, baby. Costumes are mandatory, as is falling in love with everyone on the dance floor. Tickets available here. 10pm-4am, 2 Wyckoff Ave, at House of Yes, where they put the sensual in consensual.
Jubilee Rooftop Party at Elsewhere in Bushwick
The best way to celebrate rooftop party season is to do so often, and relatively high. Like at this amazing event atop Elsewhere in Bushwick. They welcome back Jubilee and their Magic City party, which you shouldn’t miss. Because it’s summertime and you and me were made to dance in the moonlight and everyone else will be there, at Elsewhere. The party is from 5 to 10pm, then simply descend into this amazing event space and find another room in which to cut a rug. Info here. 599 Johnson Ave.
NYC’s Rose Mansion, or Why We Don’t Live in Manhattan
I have a severe allergy against these made-for-instagram installations. Shouldn’t our photographs be a reflection of our lifestyle rather than a life experience imagined to create photographs? Case in point, the new Rose Mansion in Manhattan. Made for Instagram and people who can’t decide what they want to drink, it’s your reason not to cross the river this weekend. Stay in Brooklyn. After all, I’ve already made plans for you. (do take the time to read this hilarious piece about the Mansion in Gothamist and let’s all appreciate being bad influencers.)
Things to do in Brooklyn on Saturday
Backyard BBQ at Nowadays in Ridgewood
Because all of those friends you have with backyards and grills and promises of cookouts “every day this summer!” suddenly become scarce once summer hits, Nowadays says fuck those friends. You deserve to have your hotdogs and beers and music and open air without them. Come to their backyard BBQ this Saturday for bocce ball and ping pong, cold drinks, groovy tunes, Italian hot dogs (??) and rotating BBQ fare (???) and Republic of Booza ice cream (!!!!). It starts at noon and goes, if you want, until Mister Sunday greets you the next day. Info here. 56-06 Cooper Ave.
Be a Drama Queen at Shakespeare in the Park
The heat can make us all act a little more dramatic than usual. And there’s a cast of amazing people who are channeling it all and bringing it to an intimate Globe-Theater in the center of Central Park nearly every night this summer. It’s your #reasontocrosstheriver at least once this Summer. Go to Shakespeare in the Park. One of the most magical and creatively alive happenings in the city, and best of all, it’s FREE. If you haven’t been, you’ll need to get to Central Park early. Like, 8am early. Bring snacks and coffee and a blanket. Camp out, sit in, make friends. They start giving out tickets at noon so settle in. Collect only up to two tickets per person. Spend the rest of the day at any number of museums, come back for the performance. Be moved. Info here.
Day Party at MoMA PS1 Summer Warm Up in LIC
There’s no denying that the nightlife in this city is pinnacle, but what about the daylife? Day parties and summertime in Brooklyn go hand-in-hand and also slip from our grasp when the seasons change. My favorite one in town is at MoMA PS1, every Saturday through Labor Day. World-renowned DJs, free art viewing, and all your favorite local eateries and drinkeries ready to serve you all day and into the night as you shake those hips in the museum’s backyard and sculpture garden. Get tickets here now.
Gov Ball After Dark at Villain in Williamsburg
But after dark, how will you see everyone’s hip festival outfits?? This is the best way to experience Gov Ball, without the influencers, the mud, the ferry, the Manhattan. Experience it after dark at this party in Williamsburg. The amazing Kaytranada will be spinning tunes all night, making you forget all about kind of wishing you went to the real thing this year. Tickets, $50 available right here. 307 Kent Ave.
Things to do in Brooklyn on Sunday
Bushwick Salsa at the Brooklyn Mirage in Bushwick
Elevate your dancing game or just get drunk enough to not care about making a fool of yourself at this open-air celebration of latin dance. Bushwick Salsa will take over the Mirage with a live orchestra (led by Tito Puente Jr!), dance demonstrations, and plenty of people on-hand to take your hand and spin you, dip you, and cha-cha you all night. It’s all happening from 4-11pm. Info here. 140 Stewart Ave.
The Next Festival of Emerging Artists at National Sawdust in Williamsburg
Gov Ball is cool, but still not the best way to experience so much talent and artistry that this city brings together. To experience the best, the next, the emerging, head to this festival at National Sawdust. Described as “unique place in the vastly diversifying field of new music,” it will be a full night of inspiring talent guaranteed to move you more than whatever Lil Wayne is bringing to the stage. Tickets, $30 available here. Show starts at 7pm, 80 N 6th St.
