We lose an hour this weekend (but gain a little more light in our days and skip in our step) so get going. Your weekend guide awaits, no time to waste.
FRIDAY
International Women’s Day Show at Muchmore’s in Williamsburg
It’s International Women’s Day and what better way to celebrate than seeing some amazing local (and a few international) female-led bands rock out all night at an intimate venue in Brooklyn? That was a rhetorical question. There is no better way. Eight amazing acts, Five dollars, four hours, one night and in collaboration with the refreshingly progressive Left Bank Magazine. Bring your girlfriends. Bring your boyfriends. Bring yourself and your appreciation for so many women making major (sound) waves in the music industry. Tickets and info here. 9pm-1am, 2 Havemeyer St.
Dinner and Disco at Pony Boy in Greenpoint
My heart still breaks thinking about the massive loss we all experienced when the magical, intimate bar and venue Manhattan Inn shuddered its doors. The only thing that’s helped it mend is seeing what friends and owners James Dorje and Michael Stember have done to revive the place. A restaurant that somehow flawlessly fuses Japanese, American, and Mexican flavors and brightens it all with an amazing cocktail program, plus a disco dancehall in the back bringing together some of the most original and raucous parties in the borough. Go for dinner, stay for disco. Read what the NY Times had to say about them here and make a reservation now. 632 Manhattan Ave.
The Black Queen at Music Hall of Williamsburg
Do you ever wish that music today sounded less like a trappy reggaeton pop-star nightmare and more like Depeche Mode? Me too man. And so does the Black Queen, a synthy-funky, electronic dream from LA who will be gracing us with their dark presence at the Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight. Tickets are only $20 and still available right here. Go support good live music. Doors at 8pm, Kanga and Uniform open the show. 66 North 6th St.
SATURDAY
Dead Distillers Trolley Tour through Green-Wood Cemetery, plus a whiskey tasting
Get into the spirit by taking a trolley tour through a graveyard and learning about dead spirit makers. In collaboration with Kings County Distillery, Green-Wood Cemetery will take you on a spooky trolley tour based on Kings Co. Head Distiller Colin Spoelman’s book “Dead Distillers: A History of the Upstarts and Outlaws who Made American Spirits”. The trolley will then drop you off at Kings Co Distillery for a tour and tasting. Tickets, $40 available here. Let’s get spooky, baby. Check in at the Gothic Arches at 2pm.
Five Year Anniversary Party at the Moonlight Mile in Greenpoint
When you’re looking for a bar that feels like Cheers. The magic of this place is that it seems almost audaciously imperceptive of the changes its neighborhood is experiencing. As luxury condos and high-rises begin to interrupt its view of the sky, the moonlight refuses to be dimmed, or change. It seems this bar is so shamelessly convinced that its approach will work- honest environment, genuinely friendly staff, extensive whiskey selection, a free jukebox and no bullshit that well, it works. It works damn well. And has been for 5 years now, this weekend. Come celebrate with Garry, Asaf, John, Justin, and all the best people in the neighborhood this Saturday. They open at
Brooklyn Bicycle Warehouse Sale in Greenpoint
The Brooklyn Bicycle Co will be opening the doors to their showroom for a first-ever warehouse sale this weekend. If that wasn’t reason alone for you to pedal over there, they’ll have free Peter Pan Donuts and Sweetleaf coffee plus the chance to pimp out your ride or get a new one when the season starts. Which, arguably, if you’re really a cyclist it never ends, but a little Spring revamp is always a good idea. It’s happening Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Info here, 10am-4pm, 61 Greenpoint Ave, Suite 410
Sleepy + Boo at Rose Gold in Bushwick
This is the underground dance party you want to immerse yourself into. Rose Gold, the seductive disco lounge below Cape House in Bushwick is throwing the best dance parties in the borough, for free. Just RSVP right here then get there. They’ll be joined by Giros + GC, Carlitos and Passport to keep you moving and grooving all night. The party goes from 10pm-4am, plus whatever happens in that mysterious daylight savings hour. Info here. 96 Morgan Ave.
SUNDAY
St. Patty’s Day Beer Mug Making at Brooklyn Glass in Gowanus
We’ve all kind of evolved from the green-beer guzzling, green vomit spewing appeal of St. Patrick’s Day, haven’t we? Sure the parade is still entertaining and it’s great to enjoy a pint or 8 and I’m not going to not let you kiss me, but it’s time to have our luck of the Irish feel a little less elusive. Head to Brooklyn Glass Sunday for a one-day glass blowing class that will leave you with a custom beer mug and a much cooler thing to brag about to your friends on St. Patrick’s Day than what you bragged about last year right before you threw it all up everywhere. The class is $220. Sign up here. 142 13th Street at Brooklyn Glass, Get your (
Dirty Dancing Dance Party and Abortion Clinic Benefit at the Bell House in Gowanus
The absolute best way to #revelwithacause this weekend is happening Sunday and trust me when I say you’ll have the time of your pro-choice life. Our favorite superheroes over at the Lady Parts Justice League will be bringing all the life, love, lust, and justice from Dirty Dancing to the Bell House to benefit abortion providers. There will be a station to call elected officials, a chance to break the record for the most #ThankBank postcards ever written to clinics, plus tons of dancing and sing-a-longs. Dress up as your favorite character/watermelon and be ready to move, groove, and be hoisted gingerly into the air by a sexy Swayze look-alike. Tickets are $15 and are available here. It’s happening from 2-5pm at 149 7th Street at the Bell House; be there with bells on!
