The Mayor has declared a state of emergency due to the heat in effect for the city this weekend. Which, I understand is helpful to make sure people are taking necessary precautions. But aren’t we New Yorkers? Aren’t we built to be tough, to withstand pressure, to be able to stay reasonably cool despite rising temperatures, soaring rent prices, and increasing subway delay times?
We are, and we will. And despite the “emergency” we’re going to keep going. I see a heat advisory not as a warning to stay inside and draw the curtains on my cozy little Brooklyn bungalow, but a challenge to get out there. To sit and read in the park, to try to procure a coveted lounge chair at the pool, to grill things on someone else’s grill, to feel alive and hot and unbothered by it.
And I hope you will too. De Blasio, if you’re reading this… thanks for the advisory. I love a good challenge.
See you out there, Brooklyn.
(PS – increased margarita bucket consumption is absolutely excusable in these desperate times.)
